About The Provider

Alison is one of the world’s largest free learning platforms for education and skills training. It is a for-profit social enterprise dedicated to making it possible for anyone, to study anything, anywhere, at any time, for free online, at any subject level. Through our mission we are a catalyst for positive social change, creating opportunity, prosperity, and equality for everyone.

Alison was founded in Galway, Ireland, in 2007 and has grown organically to become a major force in free online education and skills training. Today, with more than 13 million learners in 195 countries, Alison is changing how the world learns and up-skills.

They are committed to equality and access to education and skills training irrespective of gender, geography, economic status or any other barriers that can so often stunt potential. So they offer a range of free courses that meet the many diverse needs of our learners. The UN declared in Article 26 of the 1946 Declaration of Human Rights that “Education shall be free…”. This statement will always inspire us.

Alison was founded by Alison CEO, Mike Feerick. Mike is a businessman, but one with a difference. He believes in social impact, and that you can build a financially successful business focused on meeting a huge global social need, making education and skills training more accessible for everyone. He invites anyone who believes that too, to support the Alison mission.

Alison is free of charge to you. But it’s still a business – albeit a socially-focused one. We are a social enterprise making our money through advertising, merchandise, and the sale of Certificates and Diplomas, should a graduate choose to buy one.

This course begins by teaching you what self-evaluation entails with regard to teaching English as a second language. This will enable you to assess your abilities and decisions in the classroom. You will learn to differentiate between a good and bad teacher by learning the traits of sound and poor teaching methods. See how to build interactions between students through pair and group work, and discover the different activities, tasks, and routines that you can employ to encourage such collaboration. Then you unpack the concept of co-operative learning, the reasons for incorporating it into classroom routines, and its effects and benefits on students. This course will also teach you how to use the board correctly and effectively, and give examples of a badly used board so that you do not fall into the habit of using this vital tool in an inappropriate format. You will also learn how to use the board for classroom management. Explore different methods and techniques of teaching new vocabulary to your students by combining different techniques such as drilling, writing, making use of TPR (total physical response) and CCQs (concept-checking questions) to present new words to your class. The goal of every good ESL teacher is to help their students correctly pronounce words and make sentences using the right structures thereby avoiding common errors. This course will teach you how to set up structure tables and other methods of showing correct grammar.

Furthermore, you will learn about reading activities that you can use to facilitate learning. Reading can be boring to students who are not native English speakers; to overcome this obstacle, see how to incorporate different reading activities to spike interest and enthusiasm in your students. Master how to employ pre-reading activities to stimulate interest and energize the students before reading. You will also learn about different games that you can use to encourage reading so that they will be learning while having fun. This course will teach you one of the most effective methods of teaching vocabulary to ESL students: flashcards! Flashcards are essential and effective in helping students memorize new words. The course will also teach you how to draft a lesson plan for your classroom. Finally, study strategies that you can harness to effectively manage your classroom by providing a conducive learning environment and for the success of your students. Find out how to take charge of your classroom by setting rules and guidelines that will guide your behavioral attitude in learning.

This course is for ESL teachers and anyone who aspires to teach English as a second language, or anyone who desires to stand out in their profession as an ESL teacher anywhere in the world. As US writer Mark Van Doren says, ‘The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery’. With English being the most widely spoken language in the world, wouldn’t you want to help your students discover the art of speaking and writing in it? This course will teach you all the necessary skills and guides that you need to be a top-level ESL teacher.
